Setup Dialup Internet & Email in Mac OS 8 & 9

You set up your Mac either using the Internet Setup Assistant or you can set it up manually, meaning the individual components (email, Remote Access, etc.) are configured seperately. Below are instructions using either method.

Manual Setup

If you are not able to find the Internet Setup Assistant you can create a connection manually. The following steps will walk you through setting up the dial up connection. You will still need to configure your email program in order to send and receive email.

Start

  • From the Desktop, click on the Apple icon at the top left hand corner. Then point to Control Panels.
  • Click on TCP/IP.

TCP/IP
  • In the TCP/IP window select these options from the pull-down fields:
    Connect via: PPP
    Configure using: PPP Server

    Leave all other fields blank.
  • Close the TCP/IP window by clicking the box in the upper right hand corner of the window. Save changes when prompted.

Get to Remote Access

  • From the Desktop, click on the Apple icon at the top left hand corner. Then point to Control Panels. Click Remote Access (this may be named PPP).

  • Remote Access
The Remote Access window should have the following information in the fields:

    Name: Your Sum.Net username
    Password: Your password
Phone number: Appropriate dial up phone number for your location - for Sumter County it is 793-6200.
    Remote Access Options
Click on the Options button from the Remote Access window.
  • Remote Access Options (Select these options under each tab)

Connection: Connection when using TCP/IP applications
    Reminders: (Optional)
Protocol: Allow error correction and compression in modem
    Use TCP header compression

Click OK from the Options window.
Finish
Click Connect to dial up, or close the Remote Access window (save changes when prompted) and then open your browser or email program. The computer should attempt to dial and connect after you open the browser and email program.
