Troubleshooting Email Problems

I check my mail and keep getting the same messages over and over. Why?

There could be 2 causes. When you download mail from our servers, it normally stays on our server until you completely download all of it. You could be setup, however, to leave the mail on the server possibly causing you to get it over and over again. In Outlook Express, go to Tools/Accounts/Mail tab/double click your email account. Go to the Advanced tab and make sure the box "Leave a copy of messages on server" is not checked. You would only check this box if you check your mail on 2 computers and want both computers to get it, in which case one of the computers should be set to not leave a copy.

More likely, you are getting "stuck" on a message either because it is excessively large or "malformed" (not in a correct email format). We can delete the particular message for you or you can do it in WebMail. Click WebMail to login to your email account online (after closing Outlook Express), and delete your unwanted messages there, including the one getting "stuck". Then you should be able to retrieve your mail in Outlook Express!

When checking mail I get "The host mail.sum.net could not be found, please verify that you have entered the server name correctly."

Make sure you have the names of the mail servers setup correctly. They are mail.sum.net for both Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) (unless you are on our National Dialup service in which case the Outgoing is smtp.safepages.com). You can find these in Outlook Express under Tools/Accounts/Mail tab/double click your email account and go to the Servers tab. Also make sure you can browse the internet in Internet Explorer. If you can't, it's probably a general connection or DNS problem. Go to a DOS prompt when online and type ping mail.sum.net {Enter}. You should get 4 replies. If not, look for help on your dialup connection.
